Snow and Poor Visibility on Mountain Roads
Poor visibility, icy roads and snow is in the forecast for some mountain roads in Iceland today. Motorists, please be aware that conditions on mountain roads call for winter tires.
It has started snowing and there are icy conditions on high mountain roads in Northeast and East Iceland this morning. The meteorologist of the Icelandic Road Administration warns motorists that wind is expected to pick up in these areas.
Starting at noon, visibility on Öxnadalsheiði mountain pass in North Iceland is expected to be very poor. From the afternoon hours until early morning, snow showers are forecast on Steingrímsfjarðarheiði mountain pass in the West Fjords, accompanied by wind speeds of 18-20 m/sec and poor visibility.
On the southern Snæfellsnes peninsula in West Iceland, wind gusts of up to 35 m/sec are expected by late afternoon or early evening.
The Icelandic Met Office is forecasting considerable rain in Northeast Iceland today, causing rivers to swell. The precipitation will be in the form of snow in the mountains.
