Coming soon: new lighthouse in Reykjavík

Eggert Jóhannesson

A new lighthouse will soon be installed in Reykjavík, by Sæbraut road. A project is underway, across the road from Höfði house, preparing the ground for the lighthouse. It will replace the lighthouse in the tower of Sjómannaskólinn (Seamen’s School), the view of which has been blocked in recent years by tall apartment buildings at Höfðatorg.

Although ships and boats nowadays are equipped with advanced navigation systems, port authorities find it necessary to install a lighthouse to lead the way past Engey island.

Yrki Architects designed the surrounding area, while Spöng hf. has worked on moving the seawall to prepare the ground for the lighthouse.

The lighthouse will be installed at the end of September, after which it will take a month to complete the project. It will look similar to those at the Old Harbor, which originate from the 1910s.

The estimated cost of the project is ISK 75 million (USD 700,000, EUR 600,000). The lighthouse is expected to attract a number of tourists. It will be located near Jón Gunnar Árnason’s Sun Voyager, a major tourist attraction.
