Groundworks have begun on the lot of Landspítali National University Hospital in Reykjavík, in preparation for the construction of a new hospital building.

A bid from ÍAV was accepted for roadwork, utilities and building lot, as well as excavation for a treatment center, which will be the hospital’s largest building, measuring 66,000 m2 (710,000 sq ft). ÍAV’s bid was the lowest received, amounting to ISK 2.8 billion (USD 26 million, EUR 22 million).

The project involves work on roads, sidewalks, parking lots and other finishing work on the lot in specific areas by Hringbraut road. A parking garage is planned at a later stage. The project is expected to last 20 months, or through the spring of 2020. Gamla Hringbraut road will be closed by Barónstígur at the end of November.

This summer, a new parking lot is being created north of the BSÍ bus terminal. Due to utility work, traffic around BSÍ will be interrupted later this month. A large part of patient and staff parking is inside the project area, so temporary parking is needed, both inside and outside the hospital lot. Parking fees will apply.
