The Hlemmur area in central Reykjavik, which lies at the top of Laugavegur main shopping street, will experience more changes in the near future. A new land use plan will be ready by autumn and two architectural firms were chosen for the job.

The main emphasis will be put on creating a lively city environment around Hlemmur. The area has already undergone rapid change,as the old bus terminal moved to BSÍ bus terminal and the building in the square has been turned into a Food Hall called Hlemmur Mathöll.

The aim is to make Hlemmur square the centre of East Reykjavik and to make it the new entrance into the city centre.
