German musician Klaus Pfreunder was enthralled by the HÚ! Viking clap made famous by the Icelandic football team at Euro 2016 and wrote a song to it. He saw the clap when the Icelandic team returned home after the tournament and was greeted with the clap by a big chunk of the Icelandic nation in Reykjavik centre. It had been used to celebrate the team’s every victory.

“The power was incredible, it inspired me. I tried the clap at a concert and it worked great. That night I wondered how I could make it into a song. The next day I went to the studio,” he says.

Pfreunder is in a cover band called Radspitz, his song to the Viking clap is called Iceland Call, and it’s the band’s first original song.

An Icelandic version soon to come

The band sent the song to The Icelandic Football Association, which posted it on their Facebook site the next day. The response the band got was so good they decided to make an English version of the song, the original text had been in German.

Later they have been commissioned to come to Iceland to perform the song at gathering before games of the National Men’s Football Team. “I have to ask the Icelandic Football Association if I can sing it at Laugardalsvöllur stadium,” Pfreunder adds.

“We have an idea to make an Icelandic version of the song, and are looking to find someone to sing it. Now we are just looking for the right translation and the right singer.”
