Iceland’s men delivered a solid 2-0 victory this evening in their World Cup 2018 qualifier against Turkey in Reykjavik this evening.

Theódór Elmar Bjarnason and Alfreð Finnbogason scored within minutes of each other just before the end of the first half, putting Iceland 2-0 ahead going into the break.

Iceland dominated the match, with a total of eight shots on target, as compared to just one for Turkey. No further goals were scored in the second half, however, and Iceland emerged victorious with a 2-0 victory.

Iceland’s victory tonight puts them joint top of Qualifying Group I for World Cup 2018 in Russia with Croatia. After ten matches – today was Iceland’s third – the winning team in Group I will qualify for the World Cup. The runner-up will have the chance of taking part in play-offs to secure another qualification place.

Iceland’s men have never before qualified for the World Cup, but wowed a continent this summer by reaching the quarter-finals of Euro 2016.
