Finland’s Foreign Minister abruptly rose from his seat and left the stadium last night as Iceland scored a thrilling last-minute winner in the two teams’ World Cup qualifier.

This is according to Mayor of Reykjavik Dagur B. Eggertsson, writing on Facebook after the game.

“Finland’s Foreign Minister rushed out of the stands without saying goodbye when the third goal went in – either to put money in the parking meter or to grab the referee by the scruff of the neck. I felt a bit sorry for him, looking back, as I probably shouted a bit too loudly behind him. I hope he doesn’t break off relations with Iceland as Finland is a wonderful country – but what a sweet victory this was!”

Iceland’s third and winning goal, in the dying seconds of the game, appears to be the topic of discussion in every Icelandic (and presumably Finnish) workplace this morning.

Opinions differ as to whether the ball actually went over the line, but the Norwegian referee ruled that goal was to stand, giving Iceland a controversial 3-2 victory.
