The Lulla Doll is gives off the sound of a heartbeat and breathing, giving children the impression that they are not alone.

The Lulla Doll designed by the Icelandic entrepreneur Eyrún Eggertsdóttir has recently become a bit of an international sensation. The doll that retails for $71 has been offered on EBay for over $400, and the company is ramping up production to meet the unexpeced demand.

The doll is gives off the sound of a heartbeat and breathing, giving children the impression that they are not alone. It can even absorb the smell of the parents, and so even more resemble the comfort of a parent. The aim of the doll is to help babies sleep more easily and longer, experience less negative emotions, and feel safer.

The Lulla Doll is sold out, the next shipment due in September.

“When I started this journey, I wanted to make a product that children could keep with them when a parent is not around,” says Eggertsdóttir. “That developed into the Lulla Doll.”

Eggertsdóttir founded the company RóRó in 2011 and was awarded Gulleggið entrepreneur award the same year. Since then she has focused on development and production of the Lulla doll.

“When we started production in 2014, we raised fund through the Indigogo crowdfunding platform to make the first five thousand dolls that arrived in September 2015. By December we were sold out.”

The company raised more funds to make the next batch of 30,000 dolls. “They arrived in our warehouse on Tuesday and are already sold out,” Eggertsdóttir says. “This latest shipment never made it to the shelves of any stores."

The popularity of the doll has been such that Eggertsdóttir’s planned summer holiday with her children had to be postponed. She has been working long hours and into the night due to the time difference, with her working day finishing around 5:00 AM.

The comany is ramping up production to meet this demand and expects the Lulla doll to be available again in late September. Pre-orders of the doll can me made on the RóRó's website .

In the last couple of weeks, several media outlets and websites around the world have written about the Lulla doll. “This has exceeded my expectation in every way possible, and the coverage has been much more than I would have thought," says Eggertsdóttir.
