A comprehensive defeat at the hands of Croatia last night has put Iceland at the bottom of Qualifying Group B in the Euro 2016 Men’s Handball Championship and therefore out of the competition.

The top three teams in each group of four proceed to the main round and this year Iceland did not make the cut. This is the first time in the last twelve years that Iceland has not made it past the preliminary round.

Yesterday’s match was essentially over after the first fifteen minutes, by which time Iceland was trailing by 11-2 and truly outclassed. The final score was 37-28.

Iceland beat Norway and lost to Belarus in earlier games last week. This second defeat in three matches puts them last in Group B and out of the championship.

In a further blow, Iceland’s poor performance in this competition also means they lose out on a place at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro later this year.
