Long hair and a beard is the current look of the Reykjavík hipster, and local barber shops are tailoring to meet the needs of the capital's lumbersexuals who fancy a pint or two with their trim. At least two barber shops in the city are now licenced to sell alcohol and more are following the trend.

Hairdresser Jón Aðalsteinn Sveinsson at Krista/Quest hair salon has just applied for an alcohol licence. "A lot of guys want a whisky or a beer with their haircut, especially on weekends," he explains and he of course, wants to meet with customer's demands.

Although serving alcoholic beverages in barber's shops or hair salons is popular in other countries, Iceland still doesn't have a licenced barber's shop or hair salon. Reykjavik does, however, have two places where the bar is right next to the barber shop.

At the new and rather fancy Hotel Alda (Laugavegur 66-88) you'll find a barber's shop next to the hotel lobby right next to the hotel bar aptly called the Barber bar. It's the perfect location for a late-afternoon haircut while you sip on stout and look through the window at the Laugavegur's stylish shoppers.

At the hip Kex hostel you can book an appointment with a barber on certain days of the week. The barber is located on the same floor as the hostel bar, which offers a great selection of draft beer as well as wine and stronger alcoholic drinks.
