PICTURES: Stunning Northern Lights over a deserted village
These beautiful pictures were taken by amateur photographer and local police officer, Höskuldur Erlingsson.
After hearing of a great Northern Lights forecast he decided to drive to Kálfhamarsvík, a deserted village in North Iceland. A short drive north of his home in Blönduós, a town by the nr.1 ring road.
Kálfshamarsvík came in and out of being in the first half of the 20th century. Today there is not much left, except the foundation of the houses, most of which were taken down and moved away, and the lighthouse, which you can see in Erlingsson's photographs.
The area is no less beautiful in daylight, known for magnificent columnar basalt formations.
