Those passing by Hafnarstræti, a street in the city centre might be wondering what's going on. Rammagerðin, one of the city's best known shops for woolen goods and tourist merchandise has been torn town and a hotel will be built in its place.
Rammagerðin was particularly popular for its annual Christmas window display of Santa Clauses, an event that heralded the coming of Christmas for over fifty years. Children of all ages still remember the excitement of seeing the Rammagerðin santas being placed in the store windows, the first making an appearance in 1960.
