Around Iceland 2015: Garðabær
Iceland’s national newspaper Morgunblaðið is on a six-week 2015 tour of Iceland!
The paper’s journalists and photographers will be bringing us news and images of everyday life, culture, business, nature, education, services and more from the four corners of the land. Today’s destination: Garðabær.
Garðabær
Garðabær is Iceland’s sixth largest town in Iceland, with a population of 14,500. The site has been inhabited since the 9 th century. It is part of the Greater Reykjavik area.
Composer Karólína Eiríksdóttir has been named ‘Garðabær Artist of the Year’ for 2015. Her work includes operas, symphonies, chamber music and solo music and she has twice featured at the Venice Biennale art exhibition.
Work is under way on a new heated astroturf sports pitch on the Álftanes peninsula. It is due to be operation early this winter with the final touches completed next year. Garðabær is home to first-division football team Stjarnan F.C.
Fifteen years ago, a group of older citizens of Garðabær set up the Garðakór choir. The group – which now numbers around thirty – practices every week in Víðalínskirkja church in Garðabær and tours Iceland once a year.
Budding young gardeners in Garðabær can exercise their green fingers at Skólagarðarnir (‘School Gardens’), run by Ásta Leifsdóttir. Children can learn about gardening and growing vegetables in a supervised environment.
