Visitors to the Blue Lagoon have to book ahead for assured admission. According to the Blue Lagoon website the lagoon is almost fully booked until Monday. Booking ahead is neccessary according to manager Grímur Sæmundsen to ensure  a great experience for the lagoon's visitors. The immense popularity of the Blue Lagoon has resulted in an expansion for the summer of 2016 and a new five star hotel at the lagoon which will be completed in early 2017.

Visitors to the Blue Lagoon can purchase one of four entrance packages, ranging from a standard visit to a luxury package which includes entrance to the Exclusive Lounge, drinks and a reservation at the LAVA restaurant and various Blue Lagoon skin products. Guests can also book the unique in-water massage available at the lagoon.

Managing director of the Blue Lagoon, Dagný Pétursdóttir explains that the lagoon accommodates 750 people at a time. Most of the guests arrive at the same time, before noon, so the pre-booking system is more efficient.

The Blue Lagoon was voted one of the 25 wonders of the world by the National Geographic in 2012.  The rain forests of Borneo, the Great Rift Valley in East Africa and the Cave of Crystals in Mexico are among the other places on the list.
