Three generations of experts will be receiving customers at a new deli opening in Þórunnartún, Reykjavik. The deli offers cheese, cold cuts, bread, jam and lots more.

Ámundi Óskar Johansen, his father Carl Jónas Johansen and grandfather Sveinn Valtýsson are the three men behind the deli, and have decades of experience in catering. "We wanted to make a change and step a little out of our comfort zone," says the younger Johansen.

The deli, called simply, Johansen Deli will also offer ready-made sandwiches and soup which will be a welcome offering for the people in the area, an area which mixes the financial district of Borgartún with the art students of the Iceland Academy of Arts in Brautarholt and finally, the tourists staying in the many new hotels.

Johansen explains that Icelandic supermarkets are simply lacking in these kinds of products. "You find yourself in front of their cold cuts section and all you can find is pepperoni and ham, really. It all looks the same. We offer fresh turkey breast for example, in slices that are thicker on one end because that's the way the breast is shaped. Icelandic foodie culture is rapidly changing."

The deli will be opening next week. Check out their Facebook page HERE.
