Today is the last chance for a while to see a rock brought back from the moon by the astronauts on Apollo 17 in December 1972. The rock, which was donated to the Icelandic nation has been on display at the museum of exploration in Húsavík, North Iceland. Tomorrow, the rock goes back into storage at the Icelandic institute of natural history.

"It's been a great honour for us to be able to exhibit this rock for the past year and a half," says museum manager Örlygur Hnefill Örlygsson. Astronaut Harisson Schmitt, who brought the rock to earth, visited the museum this summer along with other crew from the Apollo 17.

Former US ambassador Frederick Irving presented the rock to Icelanders on behalf of US President Nixon in 1972.

The museum is open from 11- 16 today and admission is free.
