Italian violinist Nicola Lolli is a familiar face to Icelandic music lovers. Before joining the Iceland Symphony Orchestra as concertmaster in 2014, he played with the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome. He now takes the stage for the first time as a soloist with the Iceland Symphony, performing Sergei Prokofiev’s haunting yet lively – and always atmospheric – Violin Concerto no. 1, written in 1917, the composer’s most productive year. This season the Iceland Symphony is recording two symphonies by Charles Gounod, one of France’s most important 19th-century operatic composers. The latter of them, a magnificent canvas of orchestral colour with Romantic overtones, can be thought of as France’s answer to Robert Schumann. The programme concludes with Ravel’s scintillating La Valse, in which the composer stretches and moulds the Viennese waltz to a degree approaching parody, as the piece dates from shortly after World War II, when the wounds of war had not yet healed. With the ingenious orchestration characteristic of Ravel, La Valse allows the orchestra to express itself to the fullest.
