Volcanic and lava expedition: Búrfell
Departure: 5 pm in private cars from the parking lot at Vífilsstaðir, Garðabær.
Participants drive together into Heiðmörk and walk by the Búrfellsgjá to the Búrfell crater.
Snæbjörn Guðmundsson, geologist and instructor on the University train, explains the natural phenomena encountered en route. This area is a magnificent world of adventure and demonstrates clearly how Iceland came into existence. Participants will explore various caves, fissures and crevices.
The tour is a collaboration between the Icelandic Touring Association and the University of Iceland combines the experience and knowledge of the tour guides with the knowledge of academics at the University of Iceland. The aim is to create interest in science and outdoor activities with this welcome alternative.
