Flood from Glacial River Closes Ring Road
Ring Road 1, between Mývatn lake and Egilsstaðir, remains closed in Northeast Iceland, west of the bridge over Jökulsá á Fjöllum river, after ice and slush from the river flooded the road last night, mbl.is reports. Three-meter-thick (10 ft) ice floes had created a dam in the river, which burst, carrying the ice onto the road.
The bridge was not damaged by the flood, and the road has been cleared of ice and snow. It is too early to open the road, however, since it is not known whether another dam has formed in the river.
