The American Battle Monument Commission has sought permission to build a monument to World War II in Reykjavik.

The request is up for consideration within the city’s department of culture and travel as well as the environment and city planning department. The commission proposed that the monument would be built near Höfði, best known as the location for the 1986 Reykjavík Summit meeting of Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev during the Cold War.

A member of the commission, Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, visited Iceland in May along with her delegation to introduce the idea.
While plans for the monument have not been finalized the commission hopes for a simple, carved granite memorial stone at a height of about two to three meters.
