“This was just a normal day, the weather was nothing to complain about,” says Þröstur Njálsson about the conditions yesterday. “This is just the way it is on a normal day, the storm season has yet to come.”
Njálsson took these pictures of his co-workers going about their everyday job on trawler Ásbjörninn, which was located west of Iceland yesterday.
In the 50‘s and 60‘s so called sailor songs grew very popular in Iceland, romanticizing the job of the sailors who were often referred to as “the heroes of the land and soldiers of the sea”. The job was both considered rather dangerous and important for the Icelandic economy.
These pictures portraying Icelandic sailors doing their everyday job might just give a further understanding of the popularity and meaning of these sailor songs, in a country whose economy relies heavily on fish exportation.
