Elections for Iceland’s next president draw ever nearer and it seem unprecedented numbers of candidates are throwing their hat into the ring.

So what are the requirements to run for president in Iceland? Candidates must:

  • be at least 35 years of age;
  • be eligible to vote in general elections in Iceland;
  • be legally resident in Iceland;
  • secure a list of at least 1,500 referees for their candidacy.

If you fit the bill and fancy Iceland’s top job, you have until 28 May to get your official candidacy in, before elections take place on Saturday 25 June.

Of course, then there’s the small matter of actually getting elected…
