Pirates conquering country and capital
On the back of news that the Pirate Party (‘Píratar’) has been Iceland’s most backed political party nationally for half a year comes a new opinion poll that shows they are also on track to win Reykjavik City Hall.
A new poll published today by Icelandic business newspaper Viðskiptablaðið shows 27.5% support for the Pirates, a massive increase on the 5.9% the party scored in the most recent city council elections just one year ago.
The Pirates therefore push Reykjavik City Council’s current majority party, the centre-left Social Democratic Alliance (‘Samfylkingin’), into second place (24.7%, down from 31.9% last year).
The centre-right Independence Party (‘Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn’) garners just 23.4% support (down from 25.7%), according to the new poll, and finds itself in third place in the race for Reykjavik City Hall.
