Pirates maintain opinion poll lead
32% of voters in Iceland would vote for the Pirate Party (‘Píratar’) if general elections were held today, reveals a new Gallup opinion poll. The Pirate Party has now been Iceland’s most popular party in this poll for four months in a row.
The Pirates’ vote share is down from last month, but remains the highest of all major political parties at 32%. This is eight points higher than the second-placed Independence Party (‘Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn’), at 24%.
The Independence Party is part of Iceland’s coalition government together with the Progressive Party (‘Framsóknarflokkurinn’), and together the coalition garners 36% support.
The centre-left Social Democratic Alliance (‘Samfylkingin’) receives 12% of the vote according to this new poll. The Left-Green Movement (‘Vinstrihreyfingin – Grænt framboð’) scores 10% and the Bright Future Party, just 5% – the minimum required for a MP to be returned to Parliament.
