Elín Hirst MP has reacted angrily to the behaviour of anti-government protestors outside the Icelandic National Parliament (‘Alþingi’) yesterday.

A demonstration calling for the Icelandic government to stand down took place yesterday afternoon. Organisers claim that the current government is causing “permanent and irrevocable damage to Icelandic society”.

Hirst, MP for the centre-right Independence Party (‘Sjálfstæðisflokkurinn’), one of the two ruling coalition parties, deplored the methods used by some protestors yesterday on her Facebook page.

“Eggs were thrown at the windows and walls of the building. The behaviour of protestors yesterday was unfortunately not exemplary, as has usually been the case recently,” Hirst writes. “Demonstrations are an integral part of democracy and I support voters protesting against government actions they are unhappy with. But demonstrations must be balanced and objective – vandalism and violence have no place in this context.”
