Man found dead in glacier cave in Icelandic highlands
An extensive search involving SAR teams and the National Coastguard helicopter took place last night for a man who had disappeared inside a glacier cave in Höfsjökull in the central highlands. The man, an Icelander in his sixties, was found dead just before midnight.
The rescue teams were working in difficult conditions due to weather. A warning had been issued against going into the ice cave due to dangerous gases, hydrogen sulfide (H2S) forming inside the cave.
The man had entered the cave, in a part of the glacier called Blágnípujökull accompanied by a team of travellers. They were all transported to a lodge in Kerlingafjöll and then to the city.
South Iceland police are investigating the cause of the accident.
