A tie against Macedonia resulted in Iceland securing a spot in the round of 16 at Men's World Championship in Handball. Even though the results were favourable for Iceland, people are not all that happy that a win was not secured, as Iceland was in the lead most of the game. The result also means that Iceland’s next match will be against France, which holds the title of world champions.

Handball is a popular sport in Iceland. The Icelandic National Team in Handball’s participation in grand tournaments is usually the topic of every other conversation. The atmosphere however doesn’t reach the same heights as when the Icelandic National Team in Football participated in the EURO 2016. The reason is that the handball team has qualified for grand tournaments many times, even won a silver medal at the Bejing Olympics.

Another reason is that the atmosphere in Iceland is all together gloomy. This is due to a disappearance of a young women, Birna Brjánsdóttir, which the nation feels keenly.
