Iceland crash coach driving on summer tyres

The tourist coach which careered off the road this morning near Þingvellir with 42 passengers on board was driving on summer tyres, it has emerged.

Fifteen people were injured in the accident, two of whom are currently in intensive care. Snow had fallen in the area overnight but had been cleared from the road by 7:30am this morning.

Further snow began too fall at around 9am and at 10:17am snow-clearing vehicles were called out again to make their way to clear the road of snow again.

Just one minute later, at 10:18am, police received report of the coach crash.

According to Skúli Þórðarson of the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, repeated warnings of ice and snow on high ground have been issued in recent days.
