Earlier this summer, Iceland Monitor reported on a hoax article advertising a too-good-to-be-true offer from the Icelandic government to pay single men $5,000 to marry an Icelandic woman and move to Iceland.

Despite the false nature of the article in question, Iceland’s Foreign Ministry told Iceland Monitor today that its office in Iceland and embassies and representations abroad are still being inundated with queries from gentlemen interested in the ‘offer’.

Tempted men are said to be ringing and e-mailing in their droves to inquire whether the story is true, find out what the arrangements are, and even sending in applications!

The Foreign Ministry of Iceland states categorically that any and all news items or rumours of this money-for-marriage deal are a hoax and that enquiries to the Ministry or its foreign representations are not required.
