A man in his twenties who stole a car yesterday containing a young child will be questioned by police about the incident today.

Reports suggest that the father of the child had parked outside a nursery school in the Greater Reykjavik municipality of Kópavogur yesterday afternoon to pick up an elder child. He left his two-year-old in the car with the keys in the ignition and the engine running.

When he emerged, the car had gone. A wide-scale search for the stolen vehicle was mounted and the car was found 25 minutes later parked by a nearby supermarket. The child was return unharmed to its parents.

The suspect was unable to be questioned yesterday since he was reportedly in an altered state of mind. Police report that they have had dealings with the man before.
