Initial reports suggest that no Icelanders were involved in yesterday evening’s attack in Nice, in which over eighty people are thought to have been killed.

Many Icelanders are spending their summer holidays in the area, but have been active in letting relatives know that they are safe, according to the Consular Affairs Unit (CAU) of the Icelandic Foreign Affairs Ministry.

The CAU has been in touch with the French administration’s emergency team set up in the wake of the attack. There are no indications that any Icelanders are among the 84 currently reported dead.

Icelanders known to be living or staying in the area have also been contacted directly.

The Foreign Ministry has urged all Icelanders in and near Nice to follow all instructions from local authorities. Currently, people have been asked not to make unnecessary journeys and to remain in a safe place.
