Around a thousand cyclists will be setting off on the 2016 WOW Cyclothon round-Iceland road race this afternoon, to raise money for charity.

Held annually in June, the WOW Cyclothon is a 1,358 km journey around Iceland – in a maximum of 72 hours.

“The race presents a unique opportunity to enjoy a journey full of firsts and to experience something fresh and different. WOW Cyclothon combines magnificent nature, unity, persistence and teamwork in an amazing way,” reads the event website.

The Cyclotron has three main categories: A (four-person team relay), B (ten-person team relay) and individual. The individuals are already on their way while the A riders depart Reykjavik at 5pm today, and the B riders at 6pm.

Event organisers have put together an online viewer (see below) for you to enjoy the images and videos posted by the various teams on their journey round Iceland.

All proceeds from this year’s event are going to Hjólakraftur, an Icelandic organisation which promotes cycling as a sport among young people.
