The decision has been taken to post more police officers at Iceland’s main international airport and to arm them, it has been announced.

The move is in response to yesterday’s suicide terrorist bomb attacks in the Belgian capital of Brussels, which left 34 people dead.

A special detachment of armed police has also been sent to Keflavík International (KEF), together specially trained bomb-sniffing dogs.

According to Iceland’s National Chief of Police Haraldur Johannessen, it has not yet been decided how long this heightened state of alert will last.
