Iceland’s famous naming committee, the committee responsible for ruling on permissible Icelandic first names, has voted yes on the girl's name Valkyrja. Lady, however got a thumbs down.
Other girls names that passed the ruling were Sæla, Malína, Lexó and Bandís. Among the boys names that passed was Ólaf, normally spelled Ólafur in Iceland.
Middle names Hólm and Thor were rejected as they are commonly known as surnames in Iceland. Surnames cannot become middle names, so as to avoid confusion.
Valkyrja, or valkyrie in English, is a female warrior from Norse mythology, who chooses those who may die in battle and those who may live.
