Suspicions of deliberate cat poisonings in South Iceland have reportedly been confirmed.

Iceland Monitor reported earlier this month that several dead cats had been discovered in the town of Hveragerði in southern Iceland.

Gunnar Þorkelsson, District Veterinarian for South Iceland, now confirms that the likely cause of death of at least three animals has been confirmed.

“These cats were poisoned,” he states. “We are of course taking this very seriously.”

Þorkelsson prefers not to reveal exactly what poison was used but has said that the substance involved would have caused the cats unbearable suffering.

Reports suggest that a total of six cats have been killed and two dogs have fallen ill. The case is now being investigated by Selfoss Police.
