A Facebook group has been set up to save a now-(in)famous Reykjavik seal pup from being slaughtered and fed to foxes.

As reported on by Iceland Monitor this morning, police were called out to deal with a seal pup which had escaped from the Reykjavik Family and Farm Zoo and found its way to the nearby Laugardalur campsite.

It has since emerged that the seal pup is one of the animals ear-marked for slaughter this autumn, the meat being used to feed the Zoo’s foxes.

A Facebook group whose Icelandic names translates as ‘Save the life of the sprinting seal pup’ has been set up by Haukur Viðar Alfreðsson, in the hope that this quirky summer-time media story might get a happier ending.

Alfreðsson suggests returning the pup to the sea and letting it fight for survival or keeping it at the Zoo as a ‘hero’ showcase – anything other than the “inappropriate” fate of ending up as fox feed.

The Facebook group was set up this morning and has already attracted over 400 members.
