Iceland may have failed to conquer Europe with their Eurovision entry, but they are having a pretty good go at conquering the world – with their Eurovision hashtag.
As the action of Thursday’s second semi-final unfolded, Icelandic Twitter users went into tweet overdrive with comments on every spark and spangle, each labelled with the #12stig hashtag (‘stig’ = ‘points’).
Once the show was over, the #12stig wave continued with expressions of sorrow at Iceland’s failure to qualify to the Grand Final of the contest this evening.
Use of Iceland’s Eurovision hashtags reached new heights on Thursday, breaking into the Top 10 hashtags at use at that time in the world.
Will Icelanders ‘break the Internet’ tonight with the #12stig hashtag despite no Icelandic representation in the show? We wouldn’t bet against it…
