Icelandair to end service to Barcelona, focuses on Madrid instead

Icelandair will end its service to Barcelona in Spain in the summer of 2018 and add more flights to Madrid instead. In previous years, Iceland has been offering weekly service to Barcelona during 10 weeks over the summer.

"This is a strategic decision with regards to the Spanish market. We think we are better positioned with two flights to one destination than one flight to two different destinations," says Guðjón Arngrímsson, Icelander spokesman. One of the reason is to bring more Spanish passengers to the Icelandir route network, he said.

This was announced on Icelandic travel website Túristi (in Icelandic), but their story mentioned that the Icelandic carrier WOW Air, Norwegian, and Vueling have been providing direct service between Barcelona and Iceland two to four times a week over the summer. On the other hand, direct flights between Madrid and Iceland have been fewer, but Icelandair, Iberia Express, and Norwegian have been offering service on that route.
