Experts at the Iceland Meterological Office are keeping a close eye on South Iceland following yesterday's earthquake. They do not rule out further seismic activity in the area.

Yesterday's quake of a magnitude of 4.4 was measured around 2 km South East of Árnes, just east of where the great quake of June 17th in 2000 occurred.  It's the largest earthquake to have occurred in South Iceland since 2008.

"We're observing this closely and we have an earthquake watch 24 hours a day, but following such large earthquakes we do pay particular attention to that area," says Kristín Elsa Guðmundsdóttir at the Met Office.

The earthquakes were felt in Árnes, Selfoss and in Reykjavik  but there have been no reports of injuries to people or damage to property. Guðmundsdóttir says that there's no reason to fear that the earthquake will cause a reaction at the Hekla area. "It's far enough away from Hekla. It would have had to be bigger, and nearer to Hekla."
