A brand new hotel with 150 rooms will soon be rising in Akureyri, a town often referred to as the capital of North Iceland. It will be the biggest hotel not only in Akureyri, but in whole North Iceland.

The hotel is built by KEA, a business group whose story is entwined with the story of Akureyri. They bought the premises in centre of town two years ago and are finally starting to build.

The design will take aim of the overall look of Akureyri, and the hotel will planned to open in spring of 2019.

There are a lot less hotels in Akureyri centre than in Reykjavik centre, as a fraction of tourists visiting Iceland go to North Iceland in summer and even fewer in winter.

Very few hotels have been built there to answer the tourist boom in Iceland. The reason local hotel owners say is that low traffic in winter makes running a hotel harder. Now however it looks like much of the town will be booked up in summer, so a new hotel is a happy addition for those planning to visit the capital of North Iceland.
