The Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration (ICRA) is considering building more lay-bys on Icelandic roads to service tourists. Dangerous situations can be created when drivers suddenly stop their cars on the road, or stop it on a spot is not clearly visible from afar for other drivers on the road.

ICRA is currently working on mapping where tourists are most likely to stop their cars on the road to see where the lay-bys are needed. The matter is however not all that simple. Additional funding is needed, and where there’s a driveway into a road, there is increased risk of accidents.

A video displaying a long line of rental cars stop on one of the most driven roads in rural Iceland caused something of an outrage and has been watched thousands of times on social media. Iceland Monitor reported this earlier today.
