Icelandic MPs will debate today a proposal to make littering the country’s highlands and national roads illegal – and punishable by a minimum fine of ISK 100,000 (approx. €750).

The bill, scheduled for a reading in the Icelandic parliament (‘Alþingi’) today, proposes changes to current nature conservation legislation making littering public places in the highlands and on national roads a criminal offence.

“By letting such behaviour go unchecked, we are damaging our precious Icelandic nature. In other countries, high fines are imposed for littering public places,” reads the text of the bill.

This is the second time that MPs have tried to get these changes through Alþingi.
