Prepare for traffic: Iceland’s biggest travel weekend

Eggert Jóhannesson

The coming Monday is a holiday in Iceland, which has made the adjoining weekend the biggest travel weekend of the year. Icelanders flock onto the roads to seek out festivals, which are many and taking place all over the country.

This means long lines of cars on just about every non-gravel road in the country, many of them with campers or caravans, followed by an even longer line of motorhomes.

If you suffer from road-rage the sensible thing is to either stay at home or to avoid rush hours. The busiest time is usually Friday afternoon until around 21:00, and Monday from noon until dinnertime or so. The worst possible area at these hours is around Reykjavik, the traffic moves at the speed of a turtle. At least so it seems.

Another important thing is to drive safely, abide traffic laws and avoid unnecessary overtaking. For further information on driving safely in Iceland, check this out.
