Next Thursday sees the tenth annual Great Seal Count in Iceland and the Icelandic Seal Centre are looking for volunteers to take part in the 2016 operation.

The Count will take place on 21 July on the Vatnsnes peninsula of North Iceland. It will be preceded by a short presentation about the research beginning at 2:30pm, and followed by coffee and cakes and the opportunity to speak to a local scientist at the ISC.

“The purpose of this count is to gather information on the number of seals in the area,” explains ISC’s Jessica Aquino. “The count is based entirely on volunteer efforts who help us gather data for our research while also enjoying seal watching and nature.”

“The coastline is divided into different areas (2-7km long each, totalling 100km of coastline). There are plenty of areas to cover for a variety of abilities – from the most avid of hikers to families interested in a light walk along the beach.”

The Great Seal Count has been running annual since 2007.

The ISC promises a fun experience for all nature and animal lovers. This event is open to everybody aged five and over. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.

Anybody interested or wanting more information should contact Jessica Aquino directly at jessica@holar.is or on (+354) 611 3549.
