Of all routes operated by German flag carrier Lufthansa, routes to Iceland were among the most popular in terms of passenger load rates last year.

“Results last year were actually astonishing,” Lufthansa CEO Christian Schindler told Icelandic travel and tourism news website Turisti.is (link in Icelandic).

“The planes were full from the very first flight to the last and passenger load rates [i.e. the percentage of total aircraft passenger capacity used] were among the highest of all Lufthansa routes,” he explains.

Last year was the first year Lufthansa operated scheduled flights from the cities of Frankfurt and Munich. In previous years, the airline flew from Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Berlin over the tourist high-season.

This summer, Lufthansa will be upping its service from Munich to a thrice-weekly flight, the same as its Frankfurt service. There are no plans as yet to launch a route to Iceland over the winter months.
