A failure to secure agreement among the various interested parties in Iceland has scuppered plans to operate a direct international service to Denmark from the northern town of Akureyri this summer.

According to Icelandic tourism and travel news website turisti.is (link in Icelandic), plans to operate a direct service from Akureyri to Copenhagen – by means of a cooperation agreement between tour operator Trans-Atlantic and Estonian airline Estonian Air – has fallen through.

“We still feel there is a basis for launching these flights, but it is clear we will need more time to coordinate the involvement of the various parties we have been in talks with,” reads a statement from Trans-Atlantic. “We are now looking into starting the flights in 2017, with sales and marketing beginning this autumn.”

The tour operator is still committed to international flights from Akureyri, describing them as being “massively important for the region” and stating that summer flights are the necessary basis for year-round flights in the future.

International flights from Akureyri have been few and far between since now-defunct Icelandic airline Iceland Express pulled their scheduled flights to Copenhagen back in 2012.
