300 tremors in North Iceland last night

A magnitude 3.3 earthquake hit the northern fjord of Öxarfjörður at 4:01 a.m. today, some seven miles from the town of Kópasker.

This was just one of the 200-300 tremors measured since midnight in a new bout of seismic activity which has affected the region in recent days.

Two other magnitude 3 quakes struck at 3:26 a.m. and 4:03 a.m.

The largest tremor was felt in the nearby town of Kópasker. According to the Icelandic Met Office, seismic activity of this type is not uncommon in this area.
