As reported on Iceland Monitor yesterday, Icelandic low-cost airline WOW air has announced a new year-round route to Bristol (UK), starting May 2016.

British low-cost airline easyJet has operated year-round direct flights from Iceland to Bristol for almost two years now. However, Icelandic tourism and travel website turisti.is now reports that easyJet has decided to drop its summer flights and operate a winter-only schedule (links in Icelandic).

easyJet has decided to pull its summer 2016 flights between Bristol (BRS) and Keflavík (KEF), recommencing operations next October.

Passengers load factors on the route so far this year have been 83%, as opposed to 91.5% across the entire easyJet network. Passenger numbers in the winter months have risen considerably, while almost no growth has been seen over the summer. This may explain easyJet’s recent decision.

Some 13,000 passengers travelled between the two airports in the period January-August 2015.

With the withdrawal of easyJet next summer, WOW air will have a monopoly on the BRS-KEF route until easyJet returns in the autumn.
