Some 6.25 million passengers are expected to use Keflavík International Airport (KEF) in 2006, according to new forecasts. This is almost 30% more than the expected total figure for this year.

The airport’s operator Isavia presented new forecasts for passenger numbers this morning. 2015 is expected to see a total of 4.9 million passengers, up 25.8% on the 2014 figure, and 6.25 million next year (+28.4%).

Most airlines currently operating from Iceland’s main international airport will be upping their schedules or adding new destinations next year, and new airlines will begin to operate.

In summer 2016, 25 airlines will be flying to eighty destinations direct from KEF.

Passenger numbers from other countries are growing faster than Icelandic passenger numbers. The share of foreign passengers back in 2012 was 64.4% – next year it is expected to be 75.7%.

There are also expected to be more passengers transiting through the airport between Europe and North America. The figure for 2015 is 30.7%, rising to an estimated 35% in 2016.
