US carrier Delta Air Lines has announced its intention to begin flying direct to Iceland from Minneapolis, USA.

The new route will be operated daily next summer starting May 27 using 199-seat Boeing 757 aircraft. Delta has operated a New York service since 2011 and is currently the only American airline with scheduled services to Iceland.

“Iceland has proved to be a very popular destination among Americans and with this new route Delta is supporting Iceland tourism,” says Nat Pieper, head of Delta Europe. The airline has also recently announced its intention to extend its New York service to seven months in the year, beginning as early as February in 2016.

The addition of Minneapolis (MSP) takes the number of weekly flights with Delta between the USA and Iceland up to fourteen.

The Minneapolis service will give travellers from Iceland access to 130 onwards destinations in the USA, Canada and South America and opens up new opportunities for exports of Icelandic fish and imports of American goods.
